German officials, Muslims to discuss integration

German government officials and Muslim leaders were to open a summit on Wednesday to launch a two-year dialogue on how to better integrate the country's 3 million Muslims.

Interior Minister Wolgang Schaeuble has vowed that the meeting with Islamic leaders at Berlin's Charlottenburg Palace will include more than platitudes about getting along.

"Islam is an important part of Germany and of Europe, and so it must also accept the norms and values that constitute Europe," Schaeuble was quoted as saying in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily. "We are not opening ... an event at which we will only exchange pleasantries."
